The city-states of Germany's Hanseatic League were well known for their ornate city gates, perhaps the best example of which is the Luebeck Holsten Gate a must see on every tourist's itenary for its fine traditional brick and wrought iron work. A fine manufacturing tradition still maintained in the United Arab Emirates for "dubai wrought iron gates" by German trained blacksmiths
